The Essence

"Rhapis excelsa, widely known as the Lady palm or broadleaf lady palm, is an evergreen, clump-forming fan palm prized as one of the most popular palms for indoor and interiorscape use. It owes that popularity to a remarkable tolerance of low light, low humidity, drafts, and general neglect, which makes it a dependable container plant for homes, offices, and malls, as well as an outdoor screen or hedge. Native to southern China and north-central Vietnam, where it grows in the understory of wet forests, it forms dense clumps of slender, upright, bamboo-like canes covered in coarse dark-brown fibers. Its glossy, deep green, fan-shaped leaves are deeply divided into blunt, saw-toothed segments, with more segments appearing as the plant matures. Slow-growing and spreading by underground rhizome offshoots, it reaches roughly 6 to 15 feet in cultivation. Suited to USDA zones 9 to 11, it has earned the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. Notably, although native to China, it may no longer exist in the wild."
