The Essence

"Geonoma schottiana is a small understorey palm of the Atlantic Coastal Forest and inland forests of southeastern and southern Brazil, where it is common in dense forest underbrush from near sea level to about 1,600 m. Martius described it in 1826 in Historia Naturalis Palmarum, from material collected in Rio de Janeiro by the Austrian botanist Heinrich Wilhelm Schott — the holotype is H. Schott 4111 — and the epithet commemorates him. The slender, cane-like stems reach about 3.5 m and are usually produced in a cluster, though Henderson's revision and some horticultural accounts describe the plant as solitary. Each stem carries 7 to 24 regularly pinnate leaves with narrow, sickle-shaped segments. The small white flowers are pollinated by insects — flies, bees and beetles — and the fruits, 7.4 to 13.4 mm long and purple when ripe, sit on a bright red rachis that attracts the birds that disperse the seed. In a Central Brazilian study an infructescence bearing ripe fruit carried an average of 310 fruits, and the cycle from a reproductive structure emerging from its bract to full fruit dispersal averaged 16 months. Leaves are harvested from wild plants for thatch and for handicrafts such as baskets, and were formerly collected, dried and dyed for decorative items; bees visit the flowers, though it is only a minor honey plant. The IUCN assessed the species as Least Concern on 21 October 2022 (assessment published 2025), with a stable population trend and occurrence in at least one protected area, while Rio Grande do Sul lists it as Critically Endangered on its state threatened-flora list. In cultivation it is slow-growing, shade-loving and rarely available. Its minimum temperature is put at about 27 F (-3 C) and it will tolerate light frosts — enough for Palms For California to call it the most "California hardy" of all the Geonomas, a genus otherwise largely too fastidious for that climate."

Martius published the species in Historia Naturalis Palmarum 2: 143, plate 11 A (1826); the type is H. Schott 4111 from Rio de Janeiro, holotype at M. Henderson's 2011 revision of Geonoma places it in the G. schottiana clade together with G. elegans, G. pauciflora and G. pohliana, and notes that all species in the group are extremely variable. Its leaves have long been taken from the wild for thatch and for handicrafts such as baskets and the roofing of rustic buildings, and were formerly dried and dyed for decorative items.
