Huicungo
Astrocaryum Huicungo • Starnut palm
The Essence
"Astrocaryum huicungo is a spiny, clustering palm endemic to northern Peru. Kahn (2008), who designated it the type species of his section Huicungo, maps it to the lower Huallaga river valley around Moyobamba, Tarapoto and Yurimaguas, and records its habit as caespitose, large-leafed and subacaulescent to short-stemmed. The stems are mainly subterranean, in time reaching about 2 m tall and 15-18 cm in diameter, and each carries 8-15 pinnate leaves up to 7 m long including the petiole; long sharp spines arm the trunk and parts of the leaves. The fruit has a setose (bristly) epicarp, is obovoid and roughly 65-75 mm long by 37-44 mm wide, with orange flesh around a single large seed. For so obscure a palm the local uses are unusually well recorded: the palm heart and the fruit are eaten, the immature endosperm is consumed and the juice of the fruit drunk; unopened young leaves are woven into hats and fans, with three leaves normally required to make one hat; the new leaf sprout is worked into a spinning basket; stems are used, though only rarely, as house posts; and among the Shuar the petiole is reported to be made into blowgun darts. The hard, top-shaped endocarps are polished into beads and necklaces. Cultivation information is essentially absent - Useful Tropical Plants gives its cultivation details as 'Not known'."
The epithet is the Peruvian vernacular name: Kahn (2008) notes that 'huicungo' is the vernacular name given to these palms in Peru, and made this species the type of his section Huicungo. The English name 'starnut palm' refers to the etched, star-like designs around the three germination pores at the basal end of the endocarp.
The name was coined by Dammer but validly published by Burret in 1934 (Repertorium Specierum Novarum Regni Vegetabilis 35: 146), hence the author string 'Dammer ex Burret'. Henderson reduced it to Astrocaryum murumuru var. huicungo in Palms of the Amazon (1995: 245), which PALMweb lists as its homotypic synonym. It is currently accepted at species rank, and Kahn (2008) designated it the type of section Huicungo.
Natural Habitat
Kahn (2008) records the ecology as seasonal swamp forest. Useful Tropical Plants describes lowland rainforest, usually along river margins or other periodically inundated ground, and PalmPedia reports the species from both terra firme and floodplain forest.

Biology & Morphology
"A spiny, caespitose (clustering) palm, subacaulescent to short-stemmed, whose mainly subterranean stems eventually reach about 2 m tall and 15-18 cm in diameter, each bearing a crown of 8-15 pinnate leaves up to 7 m long including the petiole, and obovoid fruits about 65-75 mm long by 37-44 mm wide with a setose epicarp and orange flesh surrounding one large seed."
Morphology
Symmetrical columnar trunk with characteristic leaf-scar patterning and lignified outer cortex.
Adventitious root system spreading radially to maximize hydraulic intake in competitive soil matrices.
Distinctive unknown habit and medium stature providing a unique architectural profile.
Foliage
Vibrant green canopy featuring characteristic frond architecture optimized for photon interception and transpiration efficiency.
Specialized green tissues exhibiting moderate metabolic expansion rates.
Reproduction
Complex inflorescence branching typical of the Astrocaryum clade, exhibiting seasonal reproductive synchrony.
Nutrient-dense drupes encased in a fibrous pericarp, optimized for protection and dispersal.
Dormant embryonic tissues with high endosperm density, characteristic of resilient Astrocaryum specimens.
Ecology
Active rhizosphere communication with mycorrhizal fungal networks, enhancing phosphorus and micronutrient uptake.
Interlocked with local entomological vectors, primarily Meliponini bees or specialized coleoptera.
Gravity-mediated and animal-vectored dispersal mechanisms ensuring regional genetic distribution.
Germination & Propagation
Germination Timeline
Hydration soak.
Incubation in moist media.
Sprout emergence.
Cultivation & Care
Light
Full Sun to Partial Shade
Water
In habitat it grows in seasonal swamp forest, and in lowland rainforest along river margins or other periodically inundated ground.
Soil
Well-draining organic matrix with mineral components (perlite/bark).
PalmPedia lists cold hardiness zone 10b; no other cold-hardiness data was found, and it is a lowland wet-tropical palm. Useful Tropical Plants gives its cultivation details as 'Not known'.
